MERIPAJA

Helsinki

Jokela & Kareoja Architects, Olli Pekka Jokela, 1993

Meripaja, built on the basis of the winning proposal of the architectural competition held in 1987, is a gem of Finnish architecture of the early 1990s. The building historical survey and architectural analysis of such a young building was a challenging but interesting assignment. As thus far there has been relatively little research on the buildings of the 1990s, the survey includes a brief overview of office architecture of the 1980’s and 90’s, as well as the designing architect’s other projects, to place the building in its context.

The survey examines the building’s interior and exterior architecture in different scales, from form, volume, and spatial solutions down to materials and details. The emphasis is on finding and presenting key features and elements. The survey includes a photo section that showcases the building’s interior architecture more extensively, which at the same time serves as a documentation of the building’s current situation.
